Prepare to be Shamwowed

There are few people in this world who do not know, in the very marrow of their bones, the power of shamwow and do not tremble beneath its absorptive might. It's a shammy, it's a towel, it's a sponge. It is madness.

Do not taunt the shamwow.

Yet, even from this Cthulhian fabric, from which even our souls (or spilled soda) cannot escape, comes something good: video parodies. Here, perhaps, is the best (or atleast my favorite for the moment):

I think the Jersey accent makes it. But it could be the reference to ball sweat. Ah, ball sweat.

Raiments of Rocky Eminence

The toddlers of Tribeca deserve a better class of high priced clothing boutique, or at least a high priced clothing boutique that can spell.

Scarry Sale
Z'baby needs zome help with ze zpelling.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am aware that "scarry" is a word. According to the Free Dictionary:

Scar'ry
a. 1. Bearing scars or marks of wounds.
1. 1. Like a scar, or rocky eminence; containing scars.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, published 1913 by C. & G. Merriam Co.

I am assuming that Z'baby meant to advertise a scary sale and not a sale like or resembling scars and wounds. I could be wrong. Maybe wearing wounds is the latest crazy, right up there with pogoing. You be the judge.

Random Detritus: Going Negative Edition

I watched the second half of Frontline last night, Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story. Thanks to the wonder of DVR technology, I'll watch the front half tonight. Lee Atwater's life is a modern Faust morality play. As a political king-maker, he rose from obscurity to national prominence by doing anything and everything to ensure his side won. And it worked. Really, really well. From the top of the world, things came down hard and fast. After fainting during a speech, doctors discovered a tumor in his brain. In a matter of months, he lost his vitality, his strength, and then his life. Atwater died mostly alone, regretful, vilified by his detractors and never truly embraced by the kings he had made. It's a powerful story.

In other news, Sarah Palin called out bloggers as "kids in pajamas sitting in the basement of their parents' homes" being all mean-like. Oh, really? I for one do not favor PJs. I blog in the raw (a lovely image, I know). Way to make the Republicans seem even more curmudgeonly and out-of-touch, Ms. Palin! You're a pajama-wearing parents's-basement-living bloggers dream!

And now for something completely different: a girl on a pogo stick!

Boing Boing Boing

I didn't even know someone still made pogos but nobody told this girl who was happily pogoing down Greenwich Street during my lunch hour yesterday. Out with the new, in with the old! The pogo stick is the new Segway. You heard it hear first.

Random Detritus: Hump-Day Edition

The week seems to be moving apace. As I sit at lunch (well, waiting for lunch), I've got nothing to fill this empty space but a few random tidbits from yesterday.

First, there was the inflatable chicken-man that menaced the road from the subway to the safety of the office. Customarily, one or several papmhleteers stake out the fertile ground between the subway and the office. They hover, not unlike buzzards, seeking to prey on the unwary. The chicken-man, however, took things to another level.

Chicken-Man

I never knew the appeal of a giant chicken shilling for a chicken restaurant. I still don't.

I allow myself to get signed up for various newsletters and e-flyers, generally because every blue moon they actually produce a useful coupon. I received one from Gamestop yesterday that included this gem:

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Kingdom

There's nothing like a legend of untold riches to start a frenzied race to find it, like in the movie It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. With King's Bounty: The Legend, you can play in adventure mode or battle mode as a Warrior, Paladin or Mage as you search for the treasure under the big "W," but you won't be able to play as Buddy Hackett or Milton Berle. King's Bounty: The Legend is now available for PC. Order online or visit your local GameStop.

First, let me commend the copywriter on his reference to the classic film, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I, for one, appreciate it. However, I can't help but guess that the film, Buddy Hackett, and Milton Berle, are somehow beyond the ken of the forever coveted 18-25 year old male. This is 2008, Gamestop. Buddy Hackett? Milton Berle? Really? Could you not find any movie within the last... forty years to fit the theme?

To stick a bit on the theme of videogames, I was in Kmart yesterday (I needed socks) when I saw these beauties:

XBoxers

Well, now I know what I want for Christmas. Or not. Somebody somewhere has gone too far. Too far, I say!

Random Detritus: Friday Edition

A Facebook comment inspired my mind to wander in the direction of '80s session super-group Toto, specifically the song Africa. Yet, somewhere along the way, I found myself confronted by the lyrics to that other '80s group, Asia and In the Heat of the Moment. I must confess that I dig the tune but I'd never actually paid much attention to the lyrics. There are some heavy, heavy words in there. Check out the last stanza:

And when your looks have gone and you're alone
How many nights you sit beside the phone
What were the things you wanted for yourself
Teenage ambitions you remember well

That, friends and Romans, is some deep thought, right there.

In more uplifting news, I found, courtesy of NeoGAF, perhaps the finest GIF ever. EVER.

Ghostbusters Jig

So help me, I can't stop looking at it. I can't. Who am I gonna call? Who am I gonna call!?!

BD-Dead

When all I have to talk about is my failure to download the hyped-on-the-box BD-Live feature from the Iron Man blu-ray, you know it's a slow week.

I wasted over two hours trying to download this feature that I really didn't even care about before I finally gave up on it. Luckily, I went to dinner during this dead time and didn't suffer overmuch.

Word comes via blu-ray.com that confirms Paramount had bandwidth issues regarding the download content:

The Iron Man Blu-ray went on sale Tuesday and... an unprecedented demand was placed on the BD-Live connection... As such, the heavy amount of traffic strained the servers due to so many people heading to the same destination.

Source: "Iron Man BD-Live Statement from Paramount" by Ben Williams

There you have it, from the horse's head itself. I still don't know if this "first of its kind BD-Live application" is worth the hassle (or any hassle). I'm guessing not but, if someone has seen this groin-grabbingly wonderful application, maybe you can tell me what it actually is.

The Boulevard of Broken Umbrellas

It's funny. Every time it rains in the city the aftermath is written in the scattered skeletal remains of broken umbrellas. Their spines twisted, nylon skins ripped and flayed, their bodies lie crumpled and forgotten on the sidewalk or in the street or else ingloriously dumped into trash cans.

Umbrella Mass Grave

It occurs to me whenever I witness this carnage that the cost of more expensive, durable umbrellas is totally justified. After sacrificing a couple of cheap drug-store umbrellas on the altar of the stern New York winds, spending $30 or $40 for a umbrella that will last not only seems like a good idea but a prudent one. A gentleman should not be without a good umbrella.

Melniboné!

Sometimes you just know you're getting sick. I knew it the moment I woke up this morning. There was a rough patch at the back of my throat that scraped like sandpaper at every inhaled breath, every sip sip and swallow. I took what precautions I could but as I walked home this evening in the light rain, I felt the shiver, the slight lightheadedness that told me the fever was coming.

My feverish sleep seemed to dilate space-time itself. I felt like Elric of Melniboné, trapped in a place without time, beset by demons so terrible and fell that I dared not name them, kept alive only by a curse almost as horrible as the creatures that attacked me. Surely, if I awoke from this infinite torment, I would find myself in an alabaster sarcophagus, in a forgotten marble tomb. A fine dust would cover me. My name would be forgotten and even my people dead beyond legend. I would wake to find the world thrown upside-down in time. Only Ookla the Mok would stand beside me to take on a world I hadn't made, a world that had forgotten me.

When I did finally awake from the half-sleep, chilled from hot sweat gone cold, and beyond (at least for the moment) fever's ragged touch, I looked at the clock: barely two hours had passed since I had gone abed. How is this possible?

Clearly the Lords of Chaos have plans for me, here, and in this time. Tis a sobering thought. The fever is gone though. At least I can get some sleep.

Black, Chrome, and Premier

I saw a blog entry at Google about their new browser titled Chrome. I decided to give it a download. I haven't put any browsers other than Explorer on the new PC (Firefox was giving me some issues previously). So far, under light browsing conditions, Chrome is performing well. Only time will tell if it has got the stuff to become my everyday browser.

I received an email yesterday from Best Buy, congratulating me for obtaining an elite Reward Zone membership level: Premier Black. It sounds like a tequila. Not that I drink tequila but if I did, I would proudly order a shot of premier black. Here's the verbiage from the email:

We'd like to welcome you to the Best Buy® Reward Zone® program at our most elite membership level - Premier Black.

Premier Black is a pilot in select areas that rewards our best customers for shopping at Best Buy stores.

According to the literature, I now have access to a premier black concierge. I don't know who or what this is, but if it's someone I can boss around and generally belittle, I'm all for it. Apparently, there are other perks but they pale in comparison to this virtual butler. I shall call him Jeeves. What the name lacks in originality, it makes up in style and tradition. I'm all about tradition. Premier Black: it's good to be the king. This program just promotes itself.

Word of the Day: Swamp Donkey

I'm somewhat behind in uploading, updating, and generally using words that begin with "u". As part of my u-centric initiative, I went through some photos I had stashed away. Of interest at the moment, was the image of a defaced poster featuring the words "swamp donkey". Swamp donkey? What's a swamp donkey? I'm glad I asked.

According to UrbanDictionary.com:

of British origin, meaning a slobbering blob of a girl who hangs out at shady bars hoping for some action.

I don't know how this description became translated into a swamp donkey (are there donkeys from swamps?) but, I'm here to say that I am totally on board. This is the best word (phrase?) I've heard since merkin and anybody who knows anything knows how much I love a good merkin!

Random Detritus: Commuter Edition

There was some wierdness on the commute this morning. Both the A and C trains got shunted to the F line from Jay street to West 4th. It's the sort of thing that could use a snappy sign or at least a warning but it wasn't to be. The first I heard of it was the rather brusque conductor's announcements and pronouncements via loudspeaker. It was only effecting the uptown track... for now.

I needed to get off at Canal which, unfortunately, was within the underground Bermuda triangle being avoided by the trains this morning. I could have gotten off at West 4 and either walked down from there or take a Brooklyn-bound train to Canal. Instead, I got off at Delancy-Essex and walked across Chinatown/Little Italy/etc. Passed by a beautiful Police Department building on Broome (I think) and saw a great sign for the Five Brothers Fat Enterprises company (should have taken a picture, dammit).

Police Department #2

In other news, I saw more evidence that there are some keenly funny minds with sharpies running around my local subway stop. These are classic:

Now What? #2

Now What #1

These guys have all the answers.

RIP: George Carlin

Another day, another great shuffles off into the Stygian abyss. This time it's . The man was funny, on point, and had something to say. Something meaningful to say, framed so that you could laugh at it, even if you were the it being called to the carpet. I don't want to say that they don't make them like him anymore or, that old standby, they broke the mold when they made him but... they don't make them like him anymore. The mold, it is broken.

Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite

Twinkies (Hostess Twinkies is a trademark of Interstate Bakeries Corporation)Image via Wikipedia

I went to the supermarket this evening to pick up some fixings with which to create a plate of mega-nachos to go with game 6 of the NBA Finals tonight. As I returned, sitting on top of my mailbox was a glossy postcard ad for the Bed Bug King.

The "king" promises rapid results, guaranteed, and, as an added bonus, he apparently speaks Spanish and Russian.

What most impressed me about the ad wasn't the way-too-graphic thumbnail photos of bedbug infestations but his abbreviated business name: b2k. That sounds like shorthand for the bedbug apocalypse. Judging from the stories I've heard, that just might be coming. It's a good thing I've got this card.

Bed Bug Dr. Egon Spengler: I'm worried, Ray. All my readings point to something big on the horizon.

Bed Bug Winston Zeddemore: What do you mean, big?

Bed Bug Dr. Egon Spengler: Well, let's say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of bed bug activity in the New York area. Based on this morning's reading, it would be a Twinkie thirty-five feet long, weighing approximately six hundred pounds.

Bed Bug Winston Zeddemore: That's a big Twinkie.

Mmmm.... twinkies...

Yoinks... and Away!

I have a new hero and he is the Snickers commercial Robin Hood guy. He's the best thing I've seen on TV since the Earl of Sandwich. "The feast is mine."

Never has a daring daylight highway robbery been so fun... and delicious!

UPDATE!

Some kind soul concatenated all the Snickers commercials into one video. FEAST!!!

Night of the Flying Horror

Sunday night, at home, I was listening to ESPN's wrap-up of the Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals game and writing up a scintillating entry on my adventure at the Mars Bar. I had left one of my windows slightly open for a little extra air-flow to combat the hot night. Through this gap, a brown bullet shot into the living-room. Once inside, unfurling waxy wings, it turned once, twice, and finally landed on a pipe that runs from the floor to the ceiling of the room. It was the biggest cockroach I had seen since I moved back from Texas. It was monstrous.

Of course, with primal cunning, it kept the pipe between us. It scuttled in and down the pipe. I could hear its chitinous clawed feet clicking on the metal. I grabbed a cardboard poster tube (the only weapon I had) and took position, ready to knock it into next week. I waited for it like A-rod sitting on a 3-0 pitch.

The difference between a giant, feral, flying roach and a fastball became immediately obvious when the thing came at me like the devil's own knuckleball or, I should say, flew around me, as I impotently swung my cardboard bat, and dove straight into my bedroom. My god, I thought. My. God.

I gave chase and, after chasing it around the base of my bed once, twice, it disappeared into the wall. Into a section of exposed brick to be exact. I didn't see exactly where it went. As I stood there, speechless, it looked as if it had vanished. It had vanished but I knew, as darkness enfolded my soul, that it wasn't gone. That's it. No way I'm sleeping tonight.

I began looking for anything I might spray, spray over everything, including myself, to ward off this horrible creature. Would it fear canola? What about Endust? Lysol? My preparedness for this contingency was severely lacking. I felt like FEMA.

Being a man of science, I decided to investigate the scene of the disappearance. I examined the brick face and found a nook. It was just deep enough, just dark enough. At that moment, was it fate that intervened? I watched two eye-stalks emerge from the cranny followed slowly, oh so slowly, by the vast trunk of the insect. I was patient. I waited, waited perfectly still. I waited until the roach had emerged almost fully before, with one hiking boot, I rained down rubber-booted death.

It was, I must say, a bold gamble. One wrong move and it again could have taken flight or fled back into the darkness. It was a close thing. A close thing indeed. But I triumphed and, having triumphed, wept, for I had no more bugs to conquer. And I could go to sleep. Oh, sweet, sweet sleep.

Head of the Class

I finally took my first shave with my new HeadBlade kit. My first impression? I like it, I like it a lot.

The wheeled razor transport looks like an old Volkswagen Beetle but it makes for a smooth, steady shave. It was quick and easy- a marked difference from my other marathon shaving struggles. With my new smooth skull, I'm ready for the burlesque house.

Now, all I need to do is shake my incipient laziness and consistently shave every day or every other day and I'll be able to reduce this down to a science. We shall see about that but, so far, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Soupy Sale

I walked over to El Cofre to get something for dinner. I hadn't been there before but an ex-coworker had given it a good review. I ended up walking out with a sausage soupy rice which, I must say, was excellent.

While I was waiting for my food, I was looking at their TV which was tuned to Telemundo. A Rebecca Romijn movie was playing. The Spanish title was "Mujer Fatal". Wouldn't that translate to "Fatal Murder"? Aren't all murders fatal or did I miss something? [EDIT: I missed something. "Mujer" means "woman". Thanks, Angel.] One good thing I saw was an ad for Modelo beer with a boxer and masked wrestler arguing at a bar. At one point, the wrestler had the boxer on the bar and pinned him with a quick three-count. That's good stuff. And I had no idea what they were saying. Yet, I have a strange craving for Modelo beer...

This has nothing to do with anything I just talked about but, yesterday, I saw this woman as I was waiting outside the movie theater prior to seeing Indy IV. I can only describe what I saw as... the mega-visor! I think she may be the member of a rogue street welder cult but I haven't been able to confirm it.

(And yes, that is Morgan Freeman's brother checking her out from across the street.)
